Michigan consumer sentiment fell to 46.3 in preliminary October reading
The University of Michigan's preliminary October 2026 Index of Consumer Sentiment was 46.3, down from 48.1 in September and 53.6 a year earlier. The current economic conditions index fell to 44.7 from 50.9, while the index of consumer expectations rose to 47.3 from 46.3. Year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.7 percent from 4.6 percent, and long-run inflation expectations rose to 3.5 percent from 3.4 percent; the survey says both are their highest readings since May. Final October results are scheduled for October 23.
