What is decided at a Fed meeting

One thing, formally: the target range for the federal funds rate, the overnight rate banks charge each other for reserves. The Committee votes on a statement that names the range and describes the economy in a few paragraphs; a separate implementation note sets the administered rates that hold the market inside it. Everything else — guidance about future meetings, the pace of balance-sheet run-off — is words in that statement or the Chair's answers afterwards.

The range moves in quarter-point steps as a rule, and not at every meeting. See What is the FOMC for who votes and what happens when rates change for how a decision reaches a mortgage.

How to read the day

  1. 2:00 p.m. The statement. The first sentence with a number is the decision; the rest is the Committee's description of conditions, and changes from the previous statement's wording are what markets read.
  2. 2:30 p.m. The press conference. The Chair's prepared remarks, then questions. Nothing said here is a decision.
  3. Three weeks later. The minutes, which record the range of views without names.

What this page will and will not say

Before the meeting it states the range in force. After it, once H.15 carries an observation dated after the meeting, it states the new range and the change in basis points — arithmetic on two stamped readings. It does not predict the decision, quote market odds, or characterise the outcome. The full calendar lists every scheduled meeting.
